I am pleased to announce today my candidacy as a Republican for the 58 Assembly District for the State of Wisconsin.

When Rick Gundrum announced that he was not seeking re-election, so that he could enjoy his retirement years with his wonderful wife Lois, I immediately began to consider whether I was the right candidate to replace him and try to fill the very large shoes he will leave behind.  After much consideration, as well as consulting with trusted friends and allies, I feel confident that I am the best candidate to represent our communities.

Ten years on the County Board have prepared me to work in a large legislative body.  I have chaired the Public Safety Committee for four years, and I served on the Human Services Committee for 6 years, looking after the community’s access to basic needs.  Our County Board worked as a team to keep the tax levy flat for 10 years and reduce the County tax rate by 50%, effectively lowering the county portion of your property tax bill.

I have also served on the Wisconsin Counties Utility Tax Association Board (WCUTA), which just aided in the passage of SB 556/AD 559 through the state legislature, working with Representative Jessie Rodriguez and Senator Jessie James.  Governor Evers signed this bill into law on April 2.

I want to fight to stop the increase in state spending.  I have been part of a County Board team that, over the last 10+ years, has kept government spending flat.  We’ve made County government smaller, and in doing so have reduced the county portion of your property tax bill.  The County tax levy has remained flat, while the County tax rate is half of what is was 10 years ago.  If you look at your most recent tax bill, you will see that the County portion is lower than it was last year, and lower than it was 10 years ago.

I want to work on policies and laws that support an “all of the above” energy policy.  We need to ensure that energy production can keep pace with our rapidly expanding energy consumption.  At the same time, it is vital that we protect rate-payers (ourselves) from incurring the extra costs associated with expanding the electrical production and distribution network.  My work on WCUTA, the Wisconsin Counties Utility Tax Association has introduced me to this emerging issue.

I am a strong advocate for ensuring that law enforcement has the training, equipment, and support they need in order to be effective in preventing and combating crime in our community.  When I chaired the Public Safety Committee for four years, I always worked to ensure that our law enforcement was fully supported, and have an excellent working relationship with our County Sherriff.  I absolutely and proudly am a proven “back the badge” candidate.  I also want to support efforts to combat drug abuse, and the ancillary crimes that result from it.  

I want to look for creative solutions to our broken chapter 980 sex offender laws, which apply to the most violent sex offenders.  These are individuals who have been legally classified as “sexually violent persons.”  This issue became personal to me 2 years ago, when Outagamie County tried to place a chapter 980 sex offender in the Mapledale subdivision, right next to a community playground.  Every week, I attend bible study in the Mapledale subdivision, hosted by a family with two school-aged daughters.  I am thrilled with the work our County Sheriff and County attorney did in keeping this violent sex offender out of our community.  Our County Executive, County Board, and many staff members also united to assist in this effort. 

I am passionate about combatting human trafficking.  This was a priority of mine while on the County Board, to support the efforts of our County Sheriff and community groups in combating human trafficking in our County.  Representative Gundrum worked across the aisle several times on legislation to combat human trafficking.  I look forward to continuing that work to keep our community safe.

I am a pro-life candidate.  God wants us to protect life, and teaches us to value all life as sacred.  As such, I will support any legislation that will reduce or eliminate abortions in Wisconsin, and also fight to ensure that no tax dollars ever fund abortions or abortion clinics.

I want to protect taxpayers from wasteful spending on proposals for outdated modes of transportation, including passenger rail proposals like KRM (Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee) and the proposed Amtrak line from Milwaukee to Green Bay.  Modern transportation revolves around personal vehicle ownership, and we need an adequate state highway system instead of wasting money in a vain effort to reinvigorate waning modes of transportation (passenger rail).

I want to bring an end to the state’s outdated vehicle emission testing requirements.  I would join the coalition of legislators who already have signed on with our (hopefully) future Governor Tom Tiffany to support this.  When this program began in 1984, vehicles did not have the high level of pollution control devices that current vehicles have.  Modern vehicles only emit a tiny fraction of the pollution that vehicles emitted in 1984, and this outdated requirement needs to end.

I will fight for school-aged girls, to keep biological boys out of girl’s sports and out of girl’s locker-rooms.  Girl’s sports were created so girls could compete fairly against other girls, and that needs to be protected.  For locker rooms, there is no good that comes from allowing biological boys into girl’s locker-rooms.

I will fight for equal opportunity.  I have heard it said that you will never defeat racism if the first thing you do is classify everyone based on their race, and the second thing you do is give special privileges to some people based on their race.  Equal opportunity is federal and state law, and it ensures that all people have a level playing field in their access to education, employment, and housing.  Misguided programs like Affirmative Action and DEI need to be realigned to focus on equal opportunity.

I will fight to protect our second amendment rights.  I will oppose restrictions against high-capacity magazines, red flag laws (which deny gun-owners of their due process rights based solely on an accusation), or other unfair attacks on the rights of law-abiding gun-owners.  I will support tougher penalties for felons who illegally possess a gun, and I will also support tougher penalties for people who engage in straw purchases to help felons acquire guns.

I will be a strong voice in Madison for Election integrity.  I will fight to protect voter ID requirements.  As well, I will support all efforts to eliminate ballot harvesting and voter-roll cleanups.  I also question whether U.W. students who pay out of state tuition and have no intent to remain in Wisconsin after graduation should vote in our elections.  We don’t know how many of these students cast two ballots on election day, one in Wisconsin and one in their home state.

I am proud to start my campaign with the endorsement of our County Sheriff, Marty Schulteis.  This endorsement is a product of my strong, proven support for law enforcement.  Sheriff Schulteis knows, without hesitation or question, that I will always support law enforcement.  I plan to announce other endorsements at various points in my campaign, some of which are already in place.
